Health Basics – Eating
Latest Posts • October 16, 2020
We can do a lot to be and stay healthy. And you don’t even have to do anything extraordinary. You just have to do everyday things exceptionally well or in a healthy way and you have to stay consistent.
I do not want to complicate the topic of health here. There are countless studies in this field and different opinions supported by evidence that sometimes seem contradictory. Here on my blog, I show what works for me and what has proven to be promising from my experience.
One of my most important experiences when it comes to health is the following:
Many people overestimate what you can achieve for yourself and your body in one year and underestimate what you can achieve in ten years.
Most people expect too much too fast, then they are disappointed and fall back into their old routines.
I could write an entire novel about each area of health and quote scientific studies, but sometimes you have to try things out yourself and see what happens. It takes time for a healthy lifestyle to become a routine.
More Energy for the Immune System
Your body only has a certain amount of energy, which you should make highly available to your immune system. You can achieve this with just a few simple tricks. Today, I will show you a very simple one. For this, we will eat something together now.
Before you continue reading, take something edible – a piece of bread, some pasta, a piece of cake… – and take a normal-sized bite of it. And now observe how often you chew the bite before you swallow it. Please chew as usual and do not try to prolong the process consciously.
It is important to know your initial state so you can celebrate your improvement later.
So: How often have you chewed? Five times? Ten times?…
Now take another bite and chew 30 times. Count exactly.
And observe what happens: Does the food get a different taste?
Does the food evaporate automatically without you having to make large swallowing movements?
If you chew your food very thoroughly, it is already predigested by being enriched with a lot of saliva. And your stomach has to expend less energy to digest the food.
Of course, this is more extreme with a piece of meat or raw vegetables than with cooked vegetables, and you can probably chew up to 40 or 50 times until it reaches a thin consistency. But by making it easier for the stomach to digest the food, you give your immune system more energy.
If you make the new habit of “healthier” chewing a routine, you will eat a little longer from now on and your friends and acquaintances will probably wonder why you take so long to eat. Explain to them what you are doing and stand firm.
From Unconscious Incompetence to Conscious Competence and Beyond
According to the psychology of learning, you have now moved from unconscious incompetence to conscious incompetence in terms of healthy chewing. You know that you have probably chewed too little all your life. By consciously thinking about chewing every time you eat, you have reached a conscious competence because you know what you have to do.
However, your goal is the unconscious competence. After a few weeks or months, you will chew 30 times or more without even thinking about it.
That was it for today. The next health basics will be about healthy drinking behavior.
