About a year ago, former MMS student Ulf Geist and his band Camila won a Latin Grammy Award, and we’ve written about it on our MMS US blog. (You can read the article “Ulf Geist – from MMS student to Grammy winner” here.)
Since I always enjoy writing about the success stories of our former students, I want to introduce you to another incredible member of the MMS family this week — Sebastian Quirmbach.
Sebastian is the International Education Director at Modern Music School and mastermind behind the innovative music lessons that make us the most successful music school in the world.
It’s his job to develop teaching methods and materials, write corresponding learning goals and objectives, and to train the teachers by means of regular training and further development.
In order to maintain our high level of quality throughout all 80 Modern Music School locations worldwide, we need a concise-yet-flexible curriculum. Its contents are versatile, motivating and adaptable to the individual needs of the students and that provide fun and progress!
The continuous training of our teachers, however, is almost even more important than well defined learning objectives. Because when it comes down to it, it’s the ‘how’ that makes the difference in any given learning situation. If our teachers can successfully challenge and nurture students, work with them towards their goals in a fun and encouraging way, AND provide an environment that promotes holistic development – the result will be a real lifelong love of learning.
It’s exactly these topics our teacher training centres around. And I couldn’t ask for a better person to train our teachers than Sebastian.
I met Sebastian 25 years ago when he first became my drumming student. Fast forward to today, and he’s a seasoned musician, coach and psychologist. He has the perfect combination of qualifications to support the teachers in their advancement qualifications, professional and personal skills.
Sebastian knows that the best guarantee for top-notch music lessons is music teachers who shine methodically, musically and personally.
When Sebastian and I met 25 years ago, Modern Music School’s advertising slogan was ‘all I want is everything’.
It described Sebastian’s attitude almost perfectly (and still does!) — here was someone who was ready to transition from casual musician to pro, and who was excited to do so even if it meant moving from Germany all the way to Los Angeles.
After Sebastian successfully graduated from his drum and percussion studies at the Los Angeles Music Academy, I was able to convince him to partner with us to establish the first Modern Music School location in the US, and to develop our internationally successful MMS franchise system.
On his countless trips throughout Europe, to the US, South America and Asia, Sebastian began to train teachers and helped me develop the unbelievably successful teaching method we now use at every MMS location around the world.
Even though these travels provided many great adventures and valuable experiences, they also awakened the desire in Sebastian to complement the experience with well-founded theoretical knowledge.
He decided to take a break from Modern Music School in 2004 to devote his time toward becoming a coach and trainer, taking the motivation and love of learning that defined him at Modern Music School, and transferring it to the next chapter of his life.
Today he holds a Masters degree in Psychological Intervention, and a Masters of Arts in Business Coaching and Change Management. He’s also a Certified NLP Coach, and he’s been working as a Leadership Coach for over a decade.
Sebastian’s success story goes hand in hand with the success of Modern Music School.
I’m already looking forward to the next round of development and innovation Sebastian and I can provide Modern Music School students, so they can continue to access the best possible musical learning experience.
Sebastian, we can’t thank enough for your never ending dedication and enthusiasm!
